Second Pre Season Victory For The Ladies’ 1st Team

Cambridge City v’s Newmarket Ladies 1’s (4-2 win to Newmarket)

Newmarket went away to Cambridge City for their last pre-season friendly. From the off Newmarket dominated possession, playing a strong passing game. Town had many shots on goal and although the Cambridge keeper showed some great defencive work Newmarket’s persistence was rewarded with a goal from Claire McDonnell.

The first half continued with Town pressing hard on the Cambridge D and they were left feeling as though they should have converted more chances.

The second half Cambridge were keen to fight on and they were rewarded from a slick move with an equaliser. Newmarket were forced to step up a gear and utilise their wide players. Good distribution from the midfield allowed Georgie Kerr to break free; she passed to McDonnell who slammed the ball into goal for her second. However Cambridge were quick to level the score soon after; just beating stand in keeper Mel Jones.

The play settled and Town regained their flow from the first half and Hayley Stoneman stepped up to score Newmarket’s third. Despite some good break aways from Cambridge Newmarket hit the target once more from Di Thomas sneaking the ball in at the far post leaving the final score 4-2.

Newmarket ladies 1st team start their league campaign next week against local rivals Ely.
