Newmarket Ladies 2’s – Match Report – Sat 2nd October
Newmarket Ladies 2s 2
Sudbury Ladies 4s 1
With Newmarket’s first two games being cancelled, the ladies were keen to get their first league game underway. Fielding a very strong side, they were ready to avenge the 8 – 1 defeat that they suffered against Sudbury last season. From the pushback, Newmarket looked the stronger side with some very encouraging attacks down the flanks. A goal was inevitable, Newmarket were awarded a side line hit inside Sudbury’s 23, the ball was pushed towards the “D” and deflected towards Lydia Evans, she fired the ball at the goal straight pass the outstretched goalie to give Newmarket a well deserved lead. Any attack that Sudbury had was cut out by Newmarket’s back four, Jess Boyle, Nicola Boyle, Mel Cummins and Lorna Freeman creating some great counter attacking coming from excellent clearances. The second half proved to be much the same as the first with Newmarket dominating most of the play. The second goal came from yet another quick counter attack down the right wing, Mel Walker, who had an excellent game, took the ball to the goal line and drilled a cross into the “D” which was superbly deflected just inside the near post by Donna Keates. With 15 minutes to go, Sudbury found another gear and won a short corner which they converted to make the last quarter a real nail biter for the supporters. Newmarket’s defence held strong though and they emerged 2 – 1 winners. MOTM was Mel Walker.
