Beth Bags Five As Newmarket Put Six Past Ipswich

Newmarket ladies 2’s: 6 Ipswich Ladies 5’s: 2
With the winter taking its toll on Newmarket’ fixtures, the game against Ipswich was their first since the 6th November, so the lack of pitch time could prove to be the deciding factor in this game.
Ipswich certainly started the strongest with the Newmarket defence under constant pressure for about 10 minutes, but the defence of Nikki Boyle, Mel Cummins, Jess Boyle, Samantha Brooke and Sarah Ganniford, dealt with everything, on the rare occasion that Ipswich did get into the “D”, Shannon Stannett made some great saves. It was in fact 10 minutes match time that Newmarket needed to get back into the groove and play the kind of hockey that they are capable of playing.
Newmarket’s first goal came on the counter from an Ipswich attack, quick ball up the wing to Angel Fayers and a superbly weighted through ball, put Beth Wombwell on the score sheet. Five minutes later, Beth had added her second with a great individual goal, dribbling around the outstretched Ipswich goal keeper. Newmarket’s 3rd came from a short corner and saw Sarah Ganniford get her first goal in a Newmarket shirt. Beth’s hat trick came when she caught the Ipswich defence napping with a neat shot after pouncing on a deflection, shortly after she bagged her forth of the game when Ipswich failed to clear the “D”. Newmarket dominated in midfield with Ruth Godden, Lydia Evans, Harriott Briggs, Angel Fayers, Mel Podd and Peri Green all having excellent games.
Newmarket started the 2nd half beginning to feel the effects of their match drought, and tired legs allowed Ipswich to pull a couple of goals back, With 10 minutes to go, Newmarket weren’t quite finished and added their 6th goal of the game and Beth, her 5th of the Match following a well worked short corner.
A well deserved win sees Newmarket move back to 2nd place in the league with a game in hand and only 5 points behind the league leaders.
