Newmarket Ladies 1’s v’s Peterborough Ladies 1’s – 4-2 win to Peterborough.
After a long disruption in their winter league campaign Newmarket ladies were looking to improve their performances for the second half of the season as they faced tough rivals in Peterborough 1st team.
Despite early pressure from Peterborough, Newmarket started with some great build up play utilising the space on the wings and executing clean passes across the pitch. A textbook move involving Tracy Cockerill, Claire McDonnell, Hayley Stoneman and Becca Swift almost resulted in a goal for Town but the final defender stood strong and parried away.
Newmarket continued to rattle Peterborough and shots were flying but unfortunately none converted. Claire McDonnell had a flurry of chances for Town just before half time as did her sister Gail – making a run from defence, her shot just rebounding off the keeper. The Peterborough coach and players were very vocal in their frustrations at their level of play.
Fresh legged substitutes allowed Newmarket to make tactical changes throughout the second half although Peterborough managed to channel their frustrations and were pushing hard on the Newmarket defence. 12 minutes into the second half Peterborough were rewarded for their efforts as they skipped passed 4 Town players on the left and slammed a ball into goal, breaking the deadlock. Another followed for the team shortly after through open play.
Despite this Town did not let the visitors settle and they won a short corner. Jenny Richards pushed out the ball to McDonnell top D who hit the ball goal-wards for Richards to deflect in stylishly on the left post. Back in the game Town looked to capitalise further and another short corner chance was converted; this time through Zoe Bailey, who was perfectly places on the right post to deflect in the ball for a goal.
Despite the gutsy comeback from Newmarket they were unable to hold their opposition as Peterborough scored another 2 goals through open play. Newmarket’s fighting spirit has not been affected and they look to achieve their aim of getting clear of the relegation zone of the league table.
