Top Teamwork Keeps 2’s In Promotion Zone

The Newmarket Ladies II’s travelled to Carlton Park on Saturday to face the team who were placed 2nd in the league and the team that were most likely to prevent Newmarket being promoted at the end of the season.
Newmarket won the toss and elected to push back, what happened next, exceeded all expectations and made everyone forget how awful the weather was. Beth Wombwell took a self pass at the start, passed wide to Angel Fayers who dribbled round the defence, passed into the “D” for Beth to fire home Newmarket’s first goal in under thirty seconds, the quickest goal in II’s history. Newmarket from this point played the best hockey they have played all season, Carlton Park defended their hearts out and managed to keep the score to one nil as the whistle blew for the end of the first half.
Carlton Park must have had a severe talking too by their coach as the second half bore little resemblance to the first. The game was very evenly matched and it wasn’t long before Carlton had equalised, Newmarket however looked the most likely to score and fifteen minutes later, they had regained their advantage with Beth’s second goal of the game, Lydia Evans fired the ball into the “D”, it looked like going wide but rebounded off the post for Beth to slip past the keeper. Carlton’s equaliser came through Newmarket taking their eye of the game for a couple of minutes and with ten minutes to go, the score was tied at two apiece. Carlton Park seemed happy to settle for a draw, Newmarket, however certainly weren’t. With just a minute to play, Lydia Evans fired another ball into the Carlton “D”, a missed placed clearance landed perfectly for Beth to fire home her hat-trick and give Newmarket a vital three points that puts them back in the promotion zone of the table with two games to play.
