Blue Green Zeds  3 – 2 Newmarket

Newmarket travelled to Peterborough for the first game in
the “local” mixed league organised by Cambridge South Hockey Club.

The club was grateful to Jazz Wombwell, Zoe Bailey, Mel
Podd, Loren Davenport, Lydia Evans, Ruth Godden, Chris Warren, Dave Worrall,
Ollie Wade, Ben Gotfredsen, Chris Leggett and Mark Pears for playing at short
notice.

It was a closely
contested game, which could have gone either way. Jazz Wombwell was solid at
right back, Dave Worrall and Ollie Wade played very well in central defence
against a couple of strong Peterborough players.

Mark Pears and Lydia Evans created quite a few chances in
the first half which were either well saved by the keeper or narrowly missed
the target. Unfortunately Blue Green Zeds took the lead. Newmarket responded
immediately. Wade’s run beat a couple of players, exchanging passes with Pears,
he finished into the far corner.

There was a real contest in midfield with Leggett, Gotfredsen,
Holden, Podd, Godden & Bailey battling away, in truth either side could
have scored the next goal, unfortunately it was the Zeds just before half time.
In the second half Newmarket continued to pass the ball round, using all of
their players but unfortunately the Zeds made it three one with a powerful
reverse stick finish.

Newmarket didn’t lie down and responded through Mark Pears
and piled on the pressure for the last 10 minutes, Newmarket had a handful of
chances to take something from the game but it just wasn’t to be there day. It
was a good team performance, which they should take with them into the next
game.
