Team Effort Stops Spalding

Newmarket Ladies 1’s v’s Spalding 1’s: 4-3 win to Newmarket.
A spectacular display of hockey left the ladies first team and spectators buzzing as they came through a very tough match to win 4-3.
Spalding are Newmarket’s closest rivals as both are pushing for that top of the league spot.
Town’s opposition came out with all guns blazing and their quick skills were not like any other of their other league competitors. Newmarket quickly found themselves 2-0 down. Unable to play their own game Newmarket were getting caught in possession and had to adapt to Spalding’s nonstop efforts.
Finally the luck seemed to be swinging Newmarket’s way; forcing a short corner, Hayley Stoneman stepped up to crack a shot into goal leaving the keeper stranded.
Town looked to be finding their feet and stepped up a gear in attack. Half time gave opportunity for reflection and Town were looking to embrace the challenge of fighting for a victory. Elation soon followed as Newmarket surged forward from the off and with a slick 4 pass move Di Thomas deflected in a shot from Claire McDonnell making the two teams level. This was the start of a mighty come back from Newmarket as they grew in confidence.
With constant pressure on the Spalding defense, cracks began to appear leaving Thomas a second opportunity to hit the target, slamming home from close range.
Spalding were by no means beaten and weaved their way goalwards. Switching the ball they found goal again. This deflated Town and their supporters and the remainder of the game was heart stopping hockey.
Sue Bullimore stood strong in the Town goal with the defense also working the ball wide where possible. All were committed to getting back and retrieving the ball and wanted nothing less than a win. With just a few minutes to go Newmarket launched a deadly attack down the right hand side. The ball moved to the centre to McDonnell, she darted around the defense and smashed the ball into goal effortlessly. This was to be the winner for Town and the game will go down as one of the most exciting in the team’s history. This superb team effort took the ladies to top of the league, clear by 8 points.
