Newmarket Ladies’ 1’s v Cambridge South 1’s. Draw 0 – 0.
The ladies first team faced a tough game on Saturday against Cambridge South, who had had a couple of very good results. South were very attacking in the first half and thanks to the defence Kerry Alderson, Gail Parkins, Jazz Wombwell and Zoe Bailey South did not have many chances to get a shot at goal. When they did Jade Atkinson made some briliant saves and managed to keep a clean sheet. Newmarket had a few attacks with Claire McDonnell making some great runs through the middle and Beth Wombwell and Vicky Sievewright picking up some excellent long balls. South had a very strong defence and even though Newmarket had made lots of passes round the defence they could not convert. The half time the score was 0-0. After the break both teams came out really wanting to win the ball and try and score. With some great movements on the wing from Abbi Pass and Grace Evans the ball was getting into the D a bit more but unfortunately the home side could not score. South then had a few short corners, with Newmarket defence staying strong, South could not score either. The game unfortunately had to end early with a South player getting injured. Te final result- a 0-0 draw. Newmarket are now league leaders with equal points to St Ives but with a game in hand. They have 4 matches to go to seal the title but face St Ives, Cambridge University and Cambridge City who are all hot on their heels to take the guaranteed promotion spot.
