Newmarket Ladies 1’s v Cambridge City 3’s: 2-0 to City
A crucial match against Cambridge City for the ladies first team tested their skills and determination last weekend, but sadly the team shrank to the occasion and failed to unleash much fighting spirit.
Little could be said for goal chances or Town as after a initial spell of possession they were forced to pass the ball early in midfield and were unable to use the wide play needed to beat man markers.
Newmarket’s player of the match was Jade Atkinson who on occasion was facing pinball shots at her goal saving her team from losing by many more goals with her quick feet.
On a slippery pitch the defence in particular did well to hold their positions and best effort were made to get the ball away. The first goal came after a solid attack down the right of the pitch and City overloaded well in the D and converted a close range strike.
The next for City came late in the second half to seal the game. Again it was a close range shot after good build up from the midfielders.
Despite losing the match Newmarket were given a small lifeline through other results in the league as two other top teams faced each other with St Ives being overturned by Cambridge University, the score being 3-0. This leaves Newmarket still at the top of the league level on points with St Ives but with a better goal difference and a game in hand. Still any of the top 5 teams could now take the title as they are within 5 points of each other. Newmarket now must battle very hard if they are going to be victorious from their last 3 games.
