Newmarket Ladies 3s travelled to Peterborough looking to avenge an unfortunate 1v0 defeat earlier in the season. They were not however fully sure their game would go ahead, but despite a brief snow flurry and a slightly harder than normal pitch – the game was on.
Once the whistle blew Newmarket and Peterborough commenced exchanging blows, with Newmarket coming out on top. Fast breaks down the wings from MoM Bronnie King and Hannah Kelly who fed the ball into the attacking duo of Charlotte Abbersteen and Bea Jones both of whom had sight of goal, only to see the ball scrape narrowly past the post. The game rapidly became end to end with the awesome foursome of Pegg, Peacock, Fox and Barnes backed up by the ever dependable Spiers snuffing out Peterborough’s best efforts. Lydia Willmott, Sophie Bell and Helen Hansgate out played the Peterborough midfield snuffing out numerous attacks and setting up chances on the counter.
However despite dominating position, territory and chances it is goals that win matches and frustratingly against the run of play Peterborough snatched the lead with a well place short corner.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, Newmarket dominance, with stoic Peterborough defending frustrating the better team. Sadly there was no further scores and Newmarket were once again left cursing their profligacy in front of goal.
So much of the Ladies 3s game is good and their performances so far this season have deserved better results. Defensively they are strong, snuffing out most attacks whilst the midfield and forwards generate plenty of chances and constantly harry the opposition in a way many teams at a higher level should be envious. If the L3s could start banging in the goals then they would truly be a force to be reckoned with.
