Men’s 1s: 1-2 loss vs Bury St Edmunds 2 (Away)
Newmarket Men’s 1s travelled to Bury with a depleted squad plagued by injuries (and Nottingham) in search of a return to winning ways – unfortunately for the men in yellow and blue, this was not to be. Much to the delight of both travelling Town fans, things looked bright initially when the irrepressible Mike Skelton was on hand to knock in a close range rebound after a fantastic save by the home keeper from a Josh Dawson strike. However, after conceding a soft goal midway through the first half, Newmarket pushed the self destruct button and were caught napping by a quickly taken free hit, resulting in the away side trailing 1-2 at the break.
Town pushed hard during the second period and drew some top quality saves from the opposing keeper, but the final whistle blew with the half still goalless and consigned Newmarket to their second defeat in as many games. Still, we wanted to finish third anyway… Right?
Men’s 2s: 2-2 draw vs UEA 3 (Home)
Newmarket Men’s 2s drew at home to UEA 3s despite taking the lead twice to drop their first points of the season. This was a scrappy game in which Town struggled to string more than a few passes together, but still scored early on through skipper Drew Wood after good work from Alex Andreou and Jonny Bunker on the right hand side. However, UEA equalised almost immediately. The ball was half cleared from the home circle, blasted back in and brilliantly deflected high into the net past a helpless James Atkinson in the Town goal.
The second half was similar in that Newmarket took the lead once more through an Andreou penalty stroke, but UEA pulled back their second just minutes later and ensured the game fizzled out and ended with just a point apiece for each side.
Men’s 3s: 0-2 loss vs Sudbury 3 (Home)
A young Town Men’s 3s side succumbed to a 0-2 home defeat to Sudbury 3s, but, as always, much promise was shown by the future of Newmarket Hockey Club.
Ladies’ 1s: 1-1 result vs Wisbech 1 (Away)
Ladies’ 2s: 4-1 win vs Ely City 2 (Away)
(Beeton 2, Rolls 2)
Ladies 2s are once again rolling in victory as they beat Ely 4-1 the goals were split evenly between Georgia Beau Rolls and Vicky Beeton. Our first half started strong with us dominating the pitch, working around the players and supporting each other down the wings, perfect play by Georgia, Welshy and Helen as 2v1s were played and triangles used to get through the game as swiftly as possible.
1-0 at half time from Beeton deftly touching in a cross goal strike, we were safe for the moment but needed to see more scores on the board. Second half started quietly, the tempo then sped up and despite Ely being in our D a few more times, forcing the ball between keeper Sue Bullimore’s legs, we scored 3 more goals, 2 from open play and one from a short corner.
Man of the Match went to Emma Russell-Price due to her tireless play, showing individual skill and brilliant support. Dick of the Day went to Georgia Beau Rolls, whose two goals could not redeem her from naming a pass and then mis-striking (more than once) and falling over more times than Bambi on ice.
Ladies 2s look forward to their next game against Wisbech and to continue their winning streak.
Ladies’ 3s: 2-3 loss vs Cambridge South 4 (Home)
