Norwich Dragons II’s 0 – 5 Newmarket !’s
05/10/2019 Goalscorers: Dawson x 2, Skelton x 2, Wade
Newmarket headed up the A11 for their second away league game of the season in Norwich. Newmarket finished one place above this Dragons side last season but did complete an emphatic 8-0 victory in March. With hindsight Newmarket could easily, and perhaps should, have scored as many this time round.
The first half was quite even, both teams enjoyed periods of possession before Newmarket broke the deadlock. William Wilson intercepted a ball into their right winger and played it down the line to Oliver Wade, who beat a couple of players meandering into the D before flicking the ball over the keeper into the goal.
Dragons put Newmarket under intense pressure for the last 10 minutes of the first half, but with Louis Hrebeniak proving the shield from defensive midfield and center backs Jordan Newnes and Simon Harrington, in imperious form they were restricted to a solitary penalty corner. James Atkinson in goal made a superb save down to his left and was first to react to push the rebound round the post.
Newmarket went into half time a goal ahead but knew the next goal would be crucial. With Michael Skelton’s always easy to find up front, the movement of Josh Dawson and Simon Donald was becoming difficult for Dragons to mark. Three or four chance went begging in quick succession and there was concern that Newmarket inability to convert the opportunities would come back to haunt them.
Eventually the deadlock was broken, Felix Allen won a free hit, Wilson took it quickly and hit the ball to the back post where Skelton beat Donald to the ball deflecting in with his reverse stick.
The third followed soon after, Allen worked the ball well on the left, the ball found it’s was to Alex Andreou who picked out the unmarked Skelton at the far post to deflect into the net.
Ben Dykes had the next opportunity, rampaging down the right flank he beat a couple of men and riffled a flick passed the keeper from the by-line that somehow bounced off both posts and didn’t cross the line.
Dragons heads dropped and Dawson, intercepted a 16 yard and ran through on goal, outpacing the defence he dribbled round the keeper, finishing well on his reverse stick.
With minutes remaining Wilson had a go at copying Dykes, just in slow motion, winning a Penalty Corner, the keeper saved the initial strike but Dawson hit the ball cleanly on the turn to make it five. The final whistle blew soon afterwards and Newmarket won their third game on the bounce and a second consecutive clean sheet. The first time they’ve completed successive shut outs since March 2013.
Man of the match was Jordan Newnes for another solid display at centre back. This was also the first time Newmarket Hockey Mens 1st XI have kept back to back clean sheets since March 2013.
Next week the team look to continue their unbeaten start at home to Ipswich and East Suffolk II’s. Push back is 3pm at Newmarket Leisure Centre.
Newmarket Ladies 2s 6 – 0 St Ives 3s
Newmarket ladies 2s played St Ives 3 this week conditions were as beautiful as the Fibonacci sequence with the addition of the sun coming out which was certainly on our side. Helen Hansgate scored an absolute Worldie within the first 5 minutes which set Newmarket right and paved the way for the rest of the match multiplying the score. The integration of some textbook plays lead to the 4-0 score at half time. After half time Newmarket found the goal 2 more times. Lucie Swann scored 3 and Georgia Atherton scored 2. The sum of which meant the score was 6-0 at full time.
