Ladies 1st XI Wisbech 2 became only the second team this season to put us a goal down before half-time. They wanted everything more than we did and broke fast and hard when opportunity arose. Their had plenty of support off field and a coach intent on breaking our unbeaten record. Their goalie was phenomenal, dealing with every strike no matter the angle or power, and believe me, we tried most options. Newmarket’s heads went down and Player Coach Faye Andreou had to have some serious words at half time talk. Newmarket.did come out for the 2nd half with new vigour, communication and drive. Lucie Swann epitomised this the best, intercepting the ball on the halfway line and dribbling it to the circle, through defenders, drawing the goalie, putting her off balance and tracking the ball safely into the back of the goal. Heads lifted. Score equalised. Play was at both ends, short corners for both teams failing to convert and tensions rising. Lucie claimed the ball again and took it to the goal keeper to put Newmarket.2-1 up. Now we wanted the ball.more than Wisbech and batoned the hatches to hang in til full-time whistle. Wisbech’s performance was streaks above their position in the league would tell and they made Newmarket earn their win.  Next week Newmarket L1 face Bourne Deeping 2 at home pitch at 1.15pm Ladies 3rd XI Newmarket Ladies 3 took 12 to face top of the league Cambridge South Ladies 5. With only 3 of their team above the age of 18 and having 2 more debuts the team put in a stellar performance that bodes well for the future but were 2-0 down at half time and then 5-0 at the end. Player of the match went to Isla McCulloch but could have gone to any number of the U18s for their excellent play.  Next […]

Ladies 1st XI Cambs City 5s succeeded where no other team this season has yet. They put us a goal down in the first half but our day at the hockey office got back on track and by half-time we were 2-1 up. City defended heartily and attacked fast but Newmarket remained the stronger, more coherent team and by full-time had scored 5, Maisy Swann 1, Lucie Swann 2, Di Farrell-Thomas 1 and Faye Andreou 1. This week we travel to Wisbech 2 with a relatively late 3.30push back causing some availability issues. Ladies 3rd XI The Ladies 3s up and down season took another upward turn this week, with a 4v1 victory promotion over high flying March 1s . With a strong contingent of U18s and debutants and with additional coaching support provided by Faye Andreou and Zoe Bailey from the sidelines. Lydia Evans was the player around which the performance was made, as she scored the first and third goals and set up the second for Leah Palmer, but this was very much a hard-working team performance.  The second half was a little more evenly matched with […]

L1 travelled to Shefford & Sandy, missing a couple of their usual suspects and started with 10 players, to be joined during the first half by Vicky Benedikz once her L3s had finished their match in nearby St Neots.Shefford & Sandy seemed to desire the win and Newmarket were not their usual talkative selves but goals did come from Lydia Evans, Di Farrell-Thomas and Lucie Swann. Swann was denied another by an umpire who later apologized for not believing she could recover from the (third) foul in the D. Newmarket retain their position at top of the league and next week face local adversaries Cambs City 5 at home at 1.15pm

Newmarket L3 travelled to St Neots with a very different team to the previous week, this time with a number of U18 making their debuts rather than some of their usual experienced players. As always Newmarket played with heart and commitment, but this week youth and enthusiasm were no match for age and experience with St Neots running out 10-0 winners. The Ladies 3 host March Town at home at the weekend.  Newmarket M2 hosted Felixstowe M2s in a tough to and fro clash in Div 4NE that could have gone either way but eventually ended with a 6v3 home win […]

Ladies 2nd XI

Ladies 2nd XI vs Ely Ladies 2nd XI On Saturday, the Ladies 2 hosted top of the table Ely City 2’s. Ladies 2’s had a good strong start to the game and held most of the play in Ely’s half. With Jess making her debut upfront rather than being kitted up in pads. Alas, she could not find the back of the net due to the amazing keeping skills of Ely Goalie who denied several shots on goal. Ely then broke and were able to score from a post tap in. Half time saw Ely City leading by 1-0. The […]

Ladies 1st XI

Spalding Ladies 1 V 4 Newmarket Ladies We bravely trekked to Spalding in the fog, and yet played in unseasonably warm weather with 3 regular players unavailable and one delayed by an hour. Those called to the cavalry, Vicky Benedikz, Rebecca Alexander and Maisy Swann all did stirling work and did more than plug the holes, they created opportunities but the score was 0-0 at half time. Faye asked for short corners to be won but our first 2 goals came from Maisy being on post with deft touches for well weighted balls fed in by Charlotte Redden and then […]

Ladies 2s vs St Ives 3

Score – 1:0 loss The third game of the season saw Newmarket Ladies 2 side travel to California (if only) Road to take on St Ives Ladies 3. With the fuel crisis still rampaging, and the ladies’ side somewhat depleted since last season, the Ladies 2’s made the decision to head to St Ives with just 9 players to show St Ives that we mean business no matter how many players we had! With donuts in hand for a sugar kick courtesy of Stef Heslop and a pre-game pep talk from coach Sue Bullimore, the Ladies 2’s were ready to […]

Weekly round up: 02/10/2021

L1s beat Peterborough 7v1 whilst the L3s went 3 better winning 10v1 against Kettering 4s. The L2s whilst beaten 1v0 did so with only 9 players an impressive effort. The men’s sides had a tougher time at the office, with the M1s losing 2v0 to Ipswich 2s. The M2s produced a Jekyll and Hyde performance, gifting IES 4s a 0v4 half time lead, but we’re unlucky not to salvage a point eventually going down 3v5. The M3 game was conceded.Thank you to all the umpires and supporters who braved some rather damp weather.

Ladies 1’s

Ladies 1 travelled to Huntingdon’s new ground in the building development that is Northstowe. Bravely encountering diggers on closed roads, the  squad then dealt with the fluffy carpeted field, adjusting the way we played as a team and individuals. We adjusted very well, 6-0 up at half time, 5 goalsfrom open play with Capt Zoë Bailey scoring a brace to match Di Farrell-Thomas and Georgia Atherton scoring from a penalty corner set piece.  Playercoach Faye Andreou gave positive halftime feedback, but stated she  wanted more goals. However Huntingdon’s captain rallied her team and theonly goal in the second half was from Faye herself. This was a cracking start to our season after our game was abandoned for  injury last week. Next week we meet City of Peterborough 4 at home, 11.30.
