Hat-trick of wins!
28/10/07
It's a clean sweep for
Newmarket this weekend! The 2nd team finally got their first points as
they won 5-1 at home over the weekend - this moves them up to 8th in the
table. The ladies continued their incredible campaign in the Premier
Division by winning 2-0 against Cambridge University - increasing the gap
at the top to 5 points. The men's 1st team completed the hat-trick as they
overcame the difficult trip to Alford 2; winning 4-3; they move up to top
of the table but Horncastle's game was postponed.

Weekend's results
30/09/07
While the ladies maintain
their unbeaten and quite impressive start to the season, the men's 1st
team got their league season off to a great start away to March, clinching
victory 3-2 in the dying minutes.
The men's 2nd team who
were due to play their first league game; having only just registered in
the league, had to concede their match due to a lack of numbers. Let's
hope this changes for their next game.

On 4 June 2007
Starting at 7.30
Please attend and contribute.
This is an important meeting as it will decide how you want your club to
move forward after a very successful season with an all-weather pitch at
Newmarket. There will be a new Club Constitution to agree, new teams to
plan for, new subscriptions and match fees to agree.
It is known that the present secretary
will decline re-election. Also there are other officers who wish to have
a change. Knowing that more hands make light work, please think how you
can help a little.

Tournament
invites
15/05/07
The club has been invited to a couple of
tournaments in mid-June (Peterborough) and in August (Salisbury). With
the absence of a Social Secretary, the club needs to act quickly in
appointing somebody to the role if the club wish to attend either if not
both events.
Vacancy!
15/05/07
It has been reported that the current
Social Secretary,
Isabel Hooley,
is
stepping down from her current position
this
summer. It is not yet understood whether Theresa Choat will continue on
her own or whether somebody else is joining her or taking on full
responsibility themselves. All interested applicants are requested to
put forward their name(s) to the committee before the AGM on 4th June.
Why
should I care about Clubmark?
14/05/07
We all like to play
hockey but to play we need money, organisation, pitches etc. The
Clubmark award has impact with County Sports Partnerships and Funding
Agencies because it shows that we are working towards providing a safe,
effective and child friendly hockey environment. This can mean
priority bookings and reduced costs when booking Local
Authority venues which would be reflected
in game times and match fees.
So Clubmark does affect
you and is important for the long term success of the club.
If you can spare a little time to help
prepare the club’s bid for Clubmark please come to the AGM on 4th June.
99/00 Season
13/04/07
The last time Newmarket played in Division
5NW was in 99/00 and they
absolutely walked it! With the aid of the treasure chest of information
that Simon Gibson has supplied, reports & stats have now been added to the
site for the first time. Go on, take a trip down memory lane - this
year was a record breaking year! Also in this season, the Newmarket Mixed
team played in the E.H.A. Timpson Trophy and did superbly... read all
about The Pope's 5 goal burst!
New photos
13/04/07
They may be almost two months old, but the
webmaster has finally managed to upload some pictures taken from the shock
2-3 defeat St Ives inflicted on the men on 17th February 2007. Thanks
Kjell and sorry for not putting them up sooner.

Gallery 15 and you will find

Training
13/04/07
In case you did not know, training
continues until the end of June for Seniors and Juniors.
AGM
13/04/07
One of the topics for the AGM will be to
consider a new constitution. It will
underpin our bid for 'Clubmark' and the wording herewith has been approved
by the Committee. The revision is to bring us in line with modern
thinking; the present one was agreed some 25-30 years ago.
We wish the membership and potential
members to read it before the AGM. We would be pleased if it can go onto
the web site.
The club is concerned that the uptake from
people for the 2 June celebration dinner is low bearing in mind the level
of team success. It is hoped that this does not reflect the level of
interest in attending the AGM.
League & Cup Double
03/04/07
The Newmarket Ladies completed the double
on Saturday by winning the cup in an awesome penalty stroke competition.
Spare a thought for Sawtry who went ahead in the game and then saw victory
snatched away from them.
Newmarket have had a wonderful season and
have broken a handful of records this year, the team must be absolutely
chuffed to bits. The Premier League awaits them next season and it'll be
tough going as they take on the big guns in the region. We'll be following
their every step right here and wish them all the very best!!
Cup Final Day
26/03/07
The ladies take on Sawtry in the cup final
this coming Saturday and a win for our lasses would give them a historic
double victory this year, cementing a truly fantastic season. The club
would like to encourage as much support as possible for our girls in this
season's third and final meeting between the two teams.
Men's season over
26/03/07
The men's season came to a close on
Saturday and the members of the club will be ruing missed opportunities as
they were knocked off the top spot and now have to settle for 5th. Overall
a good season and they'll certainly be eyeing promotion next year
especially with news that a second team is forming.
Interestingly, from a personal point of
view, is that old enemies Horncastle 1s are coming down from Division 4NW.
These two teams will be pitted against each other for the first time in 5
years, the last time they met they played out a 0-0 draw. In the six times
these two teams have met, two games have been awarded to Horncastle, but
memories of defeats in 93-94 and in 94-95
have gone unanswered.
The outcome of these ties will be eagerly awaited...

Club changes
11/03/07
The AGM is being held
on 4 June, Monday, at The Foresters. All club members are expected to
attend. It follows the Club dinner of Sat 2nd at The Rosary.
As usual, there will be elections for officers. The current Secretary,
Social Secretaries and the Umpire Liaison officers have let it be known
that they will not be seeking re-election.
We are also doubling the number of teams: 2 men, 2 ladies. Sam Smith has
expressed an interest in leading the ladies but uncertainty remains
about the men. The club has mentioned that it hopes to see an improved
involvement of the men’s section at the committee and in the day-to-day
(weekday) running of what has to be 2 teams.
As a bit of news, there were 46 juniors last Thursday; a major
commitment for the club. The Club Coach has a huge job and would
certainly appreciate some help - if you feel you could spare some time
to help the club build, then email the webmaster
now. It's an exciting time
at the club at the moment and your contribution is invaluable.
Dublin Tour
07/03/07
If the Dublin tour is
going to be organised, it needs organising now! A hotel, travel and
hockey expenses have been arranged in Dublin, but team organisers in
Newmarket need to make headway in getting numbers. Fees may come to £250
per person + flight expenses.
Champions!
07/03/07
The ladies have done
it and have done it in style too! An impressive win on the final league
day guaranteed that the Newmarket ladies would be champions of Division
1. What a day it must have been as five girls got on the score sheet and
four of them got hat-tricks! With only the cup final remaining, can the
ladies do the double?
With the information we have, our
historians have noted that this is the highest place the ladies have
achieved to date. Next year they will battle it out in the Premier League
for the first time. New records broken are the amount of consecutive games
played and scored in (17 matches) and the highest Newmarket win (15-1).
Claire McDonnell has had a superb year and
has become the club all-time leading goal scorer with 25 goals and with
one more game still to play, that figure may increase by anything from
1-10!
New record!
05/11/06
Claire McDonnell goes
into the Newmarket Hockey Club record books as she helped Newmarket
Ladies to an impressive 11 - 0 league win over Cambridge Ladies 2 by
scoring six goals. That six has now increased her goal tally to a round
dozen in six games - not a bad average I am sure you will agree!
With the ladies now having scored 31 goals
in 6 games and the men having scored 26 in seven games, both teams on
course for promotion, it is quite a possibility that they'll be competing
against each other to see who does better this year...
From the Archives
01/11/06
An awful lot of work
was put into getting the new Astroturf in Newmarket, dating back to that
memorable Hockathon in 1992. Hundreds of phone calls have been made and
dozens of letters have been written... here's one I found in the
archives:
We're fed up with false promises
Newmarket
Journal 12/11/98
RE: Facilities in Newmarket. Further to the
article on your front page (October 29), I am writing on behalf of
Newmarket Hockey Club in the hope that you can broadcast our plea for
help. Quite frankly, we are not sure who can help, but we have to try, and
perhaps this will help.
For many years now we have been fed false
promises and hollow assurances regarding the building of an artificial
surface for hockey in the town. I know that sports and leisure-related
subjects such as the swimming pool have suffered similarly, and with the
real prospect of improvements at the Sports Centre/Upper School site, we
have spent the last couple of years in real anticipation.
Unfortunately, this is all we have. As you
will see from the hockey report of our match this weekend, we managed to
trounce Woodhall Spa Second XI by 12-0. However, our decline can be read
by taking you back only eight years. In the season 1990/91, we played in
the same league as Woodhall Spa First XI, and beat them twice - with no
appropriate facilities to use, other than travelling to Ely, Bury or
Cambridge, we would now expect to be beaten by a similar score if meeting
that first XI. Why, in the days of the National Lottery, sports grants,
higher budgets for education (incidentally, we currently have to train the
24 eight to 14 year olds who turn up on a Thursday on a tennis court in
Newmarket) etc., can there be no real progress towards the proposed
swimming pool/artificial pitch in Newmarket, when, with our population and
number of schools we should have been the equal of others years ago?
Simon J. Gibson, Newmarket Hockey Club
1991-2006
The 15 year struggle for our own home...
I think we've got a best-seller on our
hands!! Anyway, well done Newmarket Hockey Club and all individuals
concerned for all your effort - let's enjoy the pitch and make full use of
it.
New stuff
30/10/06
Judith Pugh, a regular
for the ladies in the early nineties, has done her profile for you all
to read. In addition, stats and reports have been added for the 98-99
season. More stats coming soon...
End of season!
30/10/06
There's still a long
way to go until the end of the season, however, plans to organise a tour
of Dublin in 2007 are currently being organised for the men's and
women's teams. The tour is expected to last four days and each day will
see the club take on a new Dublin opponent; two teams expected to
feature are Monkstown men and Genesis ladies. More info to come soon...
Dawson tally to 7!
16/10/06
according to
our records, becomes the first men's player to do so. He shoots to the
men's top scorer table with 7 goals in 2 games and let's hope the
youngster can keep going with his scoring spree! Four goals by an
individual in the Ladies team however is not so rare as four girls have
managed this in the last three seasons and three of them have done it
twice!!

12 goals for and 0 against
15/10/06
The Newmarket men's and ladies' teams have
really taken off this year and seem to be firing on all cylinders. It's as
if the 15 year pent up desire for an Astro has exploded and the club is
finally able to breath. The ladies won 5-0 at home over the weekend and
the men stunned home team Wisbech with 7 goals. The club is definitely
enjoying one of its better periods at the moment.

Youngest Hat-trick Hero perhaps?
08/10/06
Josh Dawson scored a hat-trick over the
weekend as Newmarket collected their third win in successive matches. At
only 19 years of age, could Josh be the youngest Newmarket player ever to
get a hat-trick in the history of the club?
Men beat rivals Bury in
friendly
19/09/06
Newmarket started this
season’s hockey with a friendly against ex league rivals Bury 4ths on the
newly laid pitch at Newmarket Upper School. The game started well with
Newmarket applying pressure from the start, making good use of the space
and pressing the opposition’s defence. With
Newmarket missing regular starters, this opened the way for young Harry
Dell’s debut up front, showing good awareness throughout and with
experience he will be a valuable part of the team. Duncan Freed showed he
still had what it takes to find the back of the net through set pieces,
but disappointingly had his two goals disallowed through technicalities.
The home team had to wait until mid way through the first half for a well
taken flick from midfielder Chris Jefferson, who also worked hard through
the game.
In the second half Bury
had their share of chances, including a penalty flick, but with keeper Dan
Brown on top and a well organised defence
of Drane, Freed, Badcock and Atkinson, Bury failed to level the score.
Things began to slow down towards the end of the
second half, with tiredness setting in and captain Badcock retiring from
the game with a sore thumb, but this did not stop Josh Dawson’s quality
pass through the Bury defence to Mark Pears who
pushed it home for the game to finish 2-0 to Newmarket.

Old sticks
08/09/06
The issue of a
lack of sticks for the Juniors was recently raised at a committee meeting.
The consensus
was to ask everyone to donate any sticks they no longer use, there must be
lots floating around in old stick bags, cupboards, boots of cars, etc!
Please send them Sue’s way as soon as possible, those going to training
tonight, please bring them with you.

Fillies sections. Lastly, if you think you are past it, then think
again... we are delighted to announce our intentions to start a Newmarket Vets team

importantly a social
drink after proceedings.
