Newmarket's promotion race continued a pace in their Printwize League Division 5NE clash against Gorleston in wintry conditions on Saturday. The Norfolk side were welcomed by a snow storm as both sides went through their warm-up exercises.

Newmarket were unsure what to expect from visitors as the reverse fixture was cancelled, and they are quite capable of an upset. However, Newmarket started promising and looked more the settled side making use of the first half by playing with the snow behind them. Drew Woods and Ian Starling netted to take them into the break 2-0 the better. The snow cleared part way through the first half and Gorleston looked at their strongest but failed to capitalise on their opportunities.

The remaining goals came in a golden patch in the second half where Newmarket were rampant. Adam Gallop, Greg Cummins, Chris Jefferson, Kieran Drane and Simon Greenwood linked in triangles down the right hand side of the pitch, and Barney Bowens, Magnus Magnusson and Mark Pears made use of the space on the left hand side. The remaining goals were scored by Jeremy Sallis, Cummins - with three, Gallop and Magnusson.

This display was clearly Newmarket's finest attacking form of the season, all aided with a flowing controlled style of play that they will surely need if their goal of promotion is achieved. Newmarket are now top of the table, with their promotion rivals UEA and Lowestoft Railway's important clash being postponed due to the Norfolk weather.

Newmarket must endure a rest day next week, while they wait for the league to catch up on their missed games. However, the win adds 3 points, and the goals could be important come the end of the season.
