Newmarket entered their final Printwize Division 5NE league clash
knowing that they must win to stay on track for a chance to gain
promotion into 4NE. Skipper Neil Badcock rallied a call to the team
to achieve 15 points out of the last 21, that's 5 wins from 7 games,
going one further than the first half of the season where they
achieved 4. Every player stood firm to bring in a total of 16 points
that should hopefully see them progress up the hierarchy.
The final half of the season saw Newmarket achieve a 100% home
record, running the last 280 minutes of season with a total ?Goals
For? of 20, and ?Goals Against? of 0; surely a testament to the
defence of Watts, Freed, Marston, Badcock and Greenwood. However,
despite the high number of goals scored, and excluding the out and
out sticker Sallis, goals came from a number of sources on the field
including right half Gallop, utility player Marston, and midfield
Dynamo Cummins.
Newmarket were edgy entering the game on Saturday, knowing they must
score 3 points, and increase the goal difference as far out of
Unions reach as possible, but it wasn't until 25 minutes into the
game that Newmarket broke the deadlock with a goal by Roxy Starling.
It remained 1-0 into the break, and nerves were frayed with
anticipation. Newmarket mounted pressure on a packed Magpies ?D?,
but the defiance by the league's foundation team frustrated the
Newmarket attack. Pears had two chances on the line from short
corners that he could not turn into the net, and Marston had a goal
disallowed. It could have easily been 4-0 at half time instead.
The second half saw much of the same for the first 10 minutes, with
waves of attack being met by a strong a sturdy Magpie revolt.
Marston had another chance, this time meeting with the foot of Barney
Bowens, to stop a clear chance. Newmarket continued to push with
Gallop, man of the match, getting 2 more, joined by Marston and
Sallis.
