Newmarket’s success last year that saw promotion into the East Division 4NE league leaves many unknown challenges. Newmarket normally play in the NW section, but transferred to the NE last year due to away game distances. This means that the majority of the opposition have not been faced for a long number of years.

Saturday’s league opener was one such game, and with a poor start to the friendlies, the home side were tentative in the opening minutes of their game. North Walsham had a young, fit side, with a few experienced defenders at the back making hard work for a Newmarket side missing a number of regulars.

The game was even-keeled and dominated play form David Badcock and Chris Jefferson in the middle of the park, linking to forward men Ian Starling and Josh. However, Walsham utilised the areas of pitch that Newmarket failed to take advantage of by coming down the wings. Sterling play from Mark (Arsenal) Pears and Andrew Level saw most off in what should have been a stalemate finish.

The visitors snatched victory with a Penalty Flick awarded when goalkeeper Dan Brown pushed the ball forward with use of his glove, maybe due to the up and coming young keepers inexperience; the only mistake he made in an otherwise perfect game. The Walsham forward slotted the ball neatly to right of Brown leaving the goalkeeper no chance.

Despite efforts from Kieran Drane, Starling and Josh, and a neat short corner from Duncan Freed, Newmarket’s efforts were mainly wide of target. Shooting practice a must for next week trip to UEA II.
