Hummersone 4 C McDonnell 4 Baston-Pitt Wombwell

Newmarket won their first league game of the season by default last week, after Wisbech cancelled. So on Saturday Town hoped to make an impact on the division they were relegated to at the end of last season.

Ely’s youthful side were caught on the hop from the start with Sarah Hummersone scoring Newmarket’s first goal after just 35seconds. Town were able to take advantage of a disorganised defence with Hummersone having scored her hat-trick and Claire McDonnell adding another to make it 4 : 0 by the 13th minute. As Ely began to settle into the game further attempts at goal were repelled by their keeper and cleared by the defence. Town’s Linda Baston Pitt made use of one such rebound from the goalie to make the score 5 : 0 at half time.

A more composed Ely brought structure to the game in the second half. Newmarket however remained in control of the game with good movement of the ball between players. A solo effort by Beth Wombwell opened the scoring in the second half, shortly followed by an excellent short corner routine from sisters Gail and Claire McDonnell. Good communication and skills practiced in training provided Hummersone’s 4th goal after some accurate passing in the D around the Ely defence. Persistence by Ely paid off in the 59th minute when they capitalised on sloppy Newmarket defending at a short corner. Goals 9 and 10 for Newmarket came from C McDonnell with a short corner and a reverse sweep following a pass in from the left wing.

Ely remained gutsy throughout, maintaining pressure despite the score and may prove a challenge in future seasons as their experience grows. Newmarket play away at Saffron Walden next week, a potentially more testing side.
