Another significant win
by Newmarket Ladies has secured them an early lead in the league on
goal difference. Currently joint top with Bourne IIIs on points,
whom they will face on 13th November.
The goal scoring began 8 minutes into the game with Claire McDonnell
bringing the ball to the back of the net from the half way line.
Left wing Tracy Cockerill followed suit shortly afterwards but was
disallowed as the whistle had just been blown for a short corner,
which was saved by the home ‘keeper.
Both ‘keepers were kept busy as the game ranged up and down the
pitch. In a game peppered with short corners, a contested umpiring
decision gave Saffron Walden the opportunity to get around
Newmarket’s defenders and smash the ball past the ‘keeper’s
outstretched foot in the 22nd minute. Lydia Fyson
replied, adding another for Newmarket in the 23rd
minute. The score at half time, 1 : 3.
With Saffron Walden having made a comeback from a half time deficit
in a previous game, Newmarket stepped up the pressure in the second
half and kept play almost exclusively in Walden’s half. Newmarket
controlled the ball well and passed accurately to overcome the
opposition’s superior fitness.
Good communication in the defence meant any forays into Newmarket’s
half were repelled. A strong midfield, complemented by the return
of Sarah Haird, provided solid support for the forwards, Fyson
netting a second, McDonnell bringing her total to 4 and ever
improving Beth Wombwell adding another two.
Newmarket have no game next week, they face St Ives 3A at home on 30th
October.
