Another win for Newmarket widens their lead at
the top of the Division 2 table. The home side started strongly but
let St Ives dictate the style of play, allowing themselves to be
drawn in to the centre of the pitch. Town retained the upper hand
however and scored three goals in the first 15 minutes. Two were a
result of short-corner routine, top-D shots from Lydia Fyson and one
was from attacking centre-mid Sarah Haird who capitalised on a ball
that rebounded from the keeper.
Defending
centre-mid Gail McDonnell evaded several St Ives defenders to make
it into the D to provide Haird with her second goal at 20mins.
Another effort from McDonnell just 5 minutes later was knocked off
target by a defender. The resulting short corner gave Fyson her hat
trick, a powerful shot going straight in past the left post.
St Ives
fought back but were repelled by a strong defence, which welcomed
the return of Hazel Sadler on the left. A ball fed to the top of
the D from a long corner allowed midfielder Fyson to hit the target
again and make it 6 : 0 at half time.
With an
impressive show of skill not long into the second half, Haird
received the ball from a long corner on the left and took it all the
way along the backline, baffling three St Ives defenders and the
keeper to put the ball in the goal at 44 minutes.
Play then
became more varied with St Ives pushing forward more and Newmarket
giving the game more shape, making use of the width of the pitch.
Sadler and Bev Rolph at the back supplied excellent cover, forcing
back the St Ives attacks.
Tracey
Cockerill, new to the side this season, made some excellent runs
down the left wing, providing many further goal opportunities. With
just 1 minute to go, Cockerill achieved her first goal for
Newmarket, nudging in a ball that was sent across the D and
finishing the game.
Newmarket
face Peterborough IVs away next Saturday.
