Newmarket made the long trip to Cromer on Saturday boosted by the
return of two key players to face Holt Harlequins in the East League
Men's Division 4NE clash. Paul Marston returned from injury to add
stability to the defence, and Jeremy Sallis returned from an
eventful trip to the States. In recent games Newmarket have had
trouble in finding the net, and it was hoped that Sallis could
retain the goal scoring form from the prior season.
The game opened cautiously with both sides conceding little.
Newmarket's main thrust coming through Sallis and Adam Gallop, but
both were running from deep and failed to penetrate the tight Holt
defence. Holt pushed forward two or three times but failed to put
keeper Dan Browne under too much pressure, until a well worked move
found the left winger with a good opportunity, one that was taken
well.
Although going one goal down, Newmarket continued to play the ball
about, but still could not release Barney Bowens, Ian Starling or
Josh free to put the keeper under pressure.
It was Holt who capitalised again in the first half through another
slick move left Browne lost as the home side went 2-0 into the
break.
A re-shuffle at half time saw a stronger Newmarket side as the game
opened up even further, and it was Bowens that brought the game a
goal closer. Good interplay through the middle saw Bowens free to
slot the ball home. It could have brought the game level as Starling
had missed minutes before with a great opportunity that went inches
wide of the post. Starling found himself free with the ball as he
lifted it leaving the Holt keeper lost, but it was beaten by the far
post.
Newmarket need to turn results around in their next game against
Norwich City IV's, to be played at West Suffolk College Astro at
12.00 on Saturday.
