Jane Dryland proved her
worth as Newmarket hold on to their lead in Division 2. Town, who
were without 3 key goal-making players, proved the quality of their
team as a whole by maintaining their recent scoring spree.
In what is almost
becoming a trademark for Newmarket, the scoring started early, Sarah
Hummersone knocking the ball across the line just 4 minutes in. 8
minutes later, Beth Wombwell dazzled the home side with a fantastic
solo effort, dribbling the ball up the centre from the half way
line, beating 6 defenders to finish with a great hit through the
keeper’s legs.
Newmarket continued to
dominate but lacked the support to turn chances into goals. The
Peterborough defence worked hard and the first half ended 0 : 2.
The second half began
much as the first, Dryland scoring after 1 minute, a fantastic
on-target strike, her first for Newmarket. As the game continued,
play became more even as Town shifted to a more attacking set up and
Peterborough’s forwards showed more persistence. Newmarket again
allowed the style of play to be dictated by the opposition and the
game became increasingly concentrated on the left and centre of the
pitch. At 12 minutes Dryland scored the cheekiest goal of the game,
literally stealing the ball from under the home ‘keeper’s foot.
Peterborough made a
comeback in the 21st minute, taking advantage of a
defending error, to score from a ball deflected from the ‘keeper’s
foot. Newmarket didn’t give them long to celebrate, Marie Williams
feeding the ball in from the left wing 2 minutes later and
Hummersone providing the finishing touch at the post. Wombwell was
denied her second goal in the 24th minute as a strike
from a free hit was denied by the Peterborough defence, Dryland
however was on hand to pick up the rebound ball and complete her hat
trick. Newmarket continued to assault the home goal unsuccessfully
but were most satisfied with a final score of 1 : 6.
Next week Newmarket play
Bourne III, away.
