Newmarket were still awaiting to kick-start their season going into the East Men's League Division 4NE clash against local rivals Bury. They had still not managed a win, and were full of confidence as they fielded the strongest side since the league started – missing only Duncan Freed.

In the early running up-front duo Starling and Sallis hounded the Bury goal as Gallop overlapped constantly down the right flank. However the opening goal came from a move through midfield work by Magnus Magnusson that saw Sallis one on one with the keeper inside the ‘D’. The long haired striker doesn’t need a second invitation as he slotted the ball past the keeper in the 6th minute.

Although dominating play it wasn’t until the 33rd minute that saw Sallis again slot past the keeper to put Newmarket 2-0 ahead going into the break.

Skipper Neil Badcock called for more of the same at half time, and the team were more than happy to oblige. After sustaining a short purple patch as Bury tried to regain a foothold in the game, it was Barney Bowens that ensured the points for Newmarket. 10 minutes in the second period the left winger found himself clean open at an angle to the goal. Bowens calmly lifted the ball past the keeper in the accustomed style that is becoming apparent to his game.

The crowning glory came 22 minutes after the break when young Josh Dawson, a constant thorn to the Bury defence drove into the top of the ‘D’. A finely executed strike left the Bury keeper powerless to stop the ball hitting the backboards to complete the job for Newmarket.

It could have been more as Jefferson came close from 2 well executed short corner routines, the first being saved off the line, and the second hitting the inside of the post.

Newmarket face UEA 3s at Bury W.S.C. at 12.00 with their new found confidence.
