Men's East Division 4NE - round 10.

Newmarket Men

1 - 2

Dereham 3

Freed

Newmarket knew they faced tough opposition in their East League Division 4NE clash against Dereham this week. Dereham are positioned 3rd, and it would be a good test to see if newly promoted Newmarket could maintain a position in this league.

Newmarket started well creating chances through midfield duo David Badcock and Chris Jefferson, both feeding penetrative runs from Barney Bowens and Ian Starling. One such move only to be broken down by a deliberate stick tackle at the top of the ‘D’ with the Dereham keeper stranded.

However it was Dereham who lead into the first half as they began to exert pressure on the Newmarket defence. Two short corner routines set the visitors ahead, the first flicked over keeper Dan Brown, and the second following on from a goal mouth scramble.

A tough team talk inspired Newmarket in the second half as they dominated the first period, with Adam Gallop and Barney Bowens pushing down each wing. The home side’s goal also came from a fiercely struck short corner by Duncan Freed.

Despite the pressure Newmarket were not able to bring the game level as time and tired legs told. Newmarket should take consolation in proving that they can complete in the higher league.

Newmarket now travel to Norwich Union on Saturday hoping to impress on jointly promoted side.
