Peterborough failed to interfere with Newmarket’s
unbeaten run at their meeting on Saturday where both teams had to
battle against strong winds as well as each other. Gail McDonnell
started the sequence to open the scoring; bringing the ball up the
centre midfield, releasing it to Lydia Fyson who blasted it past the
keeper’s left foot. Newmarket continued to work the midfield hard,
channelling balls into the D.
Excellent ball control in
the 18th min by Tracy Cockerill on the left wing kept
Newmarket in possession; she crossed the ball into the D for Marie
Williams to score from the right. Peterborough attacked and won a
short corner but ‘keeper Sue Bullimore kept them from scoring.
A Williams ball then found
Beth Wombwell in the D. With confidence gained from a regular
partnering, Wombwell and Cockerill played the ball around the
visiting ‘keeper to hit the backboard. Peterborough’s goalie
repelled a reverse stick shot 7mins later and the ball was then
taken the length of the pitch for Bullimore to mirror her
counterpart’s actions – the clearance hit a Newmarket foot giving
Peterborough a short corner which Bullimore also sent clear.
Cockerill again linked in with Wombwell to score at 33mins.
Peterborough tried to turn
the tide in the second half, a sideline hit leading to a shot on
goal that went wide and a drive into the D which was tackled and
cleared at 41mins. With a faster pace than last week, Cockerill,
always in the right place at the right time, received the ball 1min
later with a clear view on goal: 4:0.
Cockerill scored again and
Newmarket kept their chances coming; a short corner strike by Fyson,
inches wide to the right and another shot going to the left. The
final goal came 4 minutes from the final whistle; a free hit outside
the D, slipped to McDonnell who crossed it in for Hummersone to
strike, the ‘keeper saved but Wombwell, ever alert, slotted in the
rebound ball.
Newmarket have no planned
fixture for Saturday but hope to play a friendly or play their
rescheduled game at Ely.
