Cambridgeshire Ladies League Friendly
Newmarket Town 2 : Cambridge
South 0
Newmarket
entertained Cambridge South to a friendly at Nowton Park, Bury this
Saturday. Cambridge are currently in division 2 of the
Cambridgeshire Ladies League, from which Newmarket were demoted last
season. The game was a laid back affair with both teams taking the
opportunity to welcome new players. Newmarket also appreciated
Hazel Sadler whose work has kept her from playing this season.
Cambridge
seemed to play a very defensive game which gave Newmarket the
opportunity to bring play almost exclusively to the visitor’s half.
This meant that attacks by Town were well supported, with numbers
available for pressure, passes and to pick up rebound balls.
South’s attacks on the other hand were often more isolated with the
number of forwards being matched by Newmarket’s defenders.
From the
state of play the score was surprising with Town offering shot after
shot on goal. The defensive set-up by South, however, was obviously
based on a lot of skill as balls were continuously repelled from the
goal, no small praise going to the visiting goalie who put in an
outstanding performance.
The first
goal came in the 7th minute, Sarah Hummersone nudging in
a ball, around the keeper, on the right. A second goal looked
likely but the half-time whistle was blown just as Newmarket were
about to put the ball into Cambridge’s D. The second goal came in
similar circumstances; a short corner was awarded just as Time was
called. The sequence of play was allowed to finish and a clean shot
from Beth Wombwell passed the keeper’s left foot to hit the back
board – saving her a threatened walk home!
Newmarket
were pleased to practice with a team currently in the division
above. If they gain promotion next season, this game showed that
they cannot take for granted their current high-scoring habits.
Newmarket
entertain Bourne, currently second in the table, at West Suffolk
Sport Centre on Saturday, 12.00 push back.
