Ice prevented the previous fixture but Newmarket travelled to
Wisbech on Saturday for the game they had sportingly re-scheduled
due to injury.
It was a good close game that
could have gone either way. Wisbech opened the scoring after 11
minutes. Newmarket didn’t let this get them down and prevented
another goal until Wisbech got behind the goalie 6 minutes before
half time.
The visitors kept their
confidence and pushed forward. A fine hit from Beth Wombwell just 2
minutes before the break, broke her duck and kept Newmarket in the
game.
A strong team talk from skipper
Sam Smith matched her strength in defence, earning her Player of the
Match. The team heeded her and took on a more offensive dynamic.
Both teams remained
enthusiastic and the game varied in pace and area. The home team
with plenty of support from the sidelines, took the score to 3:1 at
50 mins.
After a marathon of long
corners, Newmarket endured to win a short and Sarah Haird‘s
finishing touch closed the gap. More opportunities were made but
time ran out. The visitors went home pleased with their performance
but without any points.
Newmarket have a friendly game
against Cambridge City on 10th December.
