Captain, Sam Smith, chose a new format on Saturday and it proved
profitable.
A
short corner routine made Clare McDonnell the first to score in 2006
just six minutes into the match. Newmarket looked very strong in
the first half and were able to defend at the half way line. A long
ball from the defence found Beth Wombwell in the D for the second
goal at 16 minutes.
Tracy Cockerill took the third, making the vital touch on her
reverse stick at full stretch, bamboozling the ‘keeper.
Di
Thomas and McDonnell made a strong pairing at the front but good
skills from the rest of the team provided the support and scoring
opportunities needed. Tireless work from Isi Hooley in midfield
earned her player of the match. New shoes invigorated Bev Rolph who
covered the back right position with confidence and won a number of
difficult one-on-ones.
Wombwell provided the feed for the next goal, 11 minutes into the
second half and Cockerill was on the post to knock it in. McDonnell
matched her, just a minute later, with a sweep from just inside the
D.
Newmarket lost some of their structure in this half and Huntingdon
gained more possession. The home team continued to push for goals,
however, and were unlucky not to add a couple more. Some excellent
saves from Sue Bullimore allowed Newmarket a clean sheet.
Newmarket play away at Huntingdon next week.
