The disparity in their rankings was not apparent when second placed
Huntingdon met third from bottom Newmarket on Saturday. Both sides
agreed that it was a great match and a draw would have better
reflected the game.
Newmarket played with the skill that won them last week’s game. The
experience they faced, however, was greater and more passes were
intercepted and tackles avoided.
Battles were hard-fought in mid-field and play changed direction
frequently. Di Thomas being named player of the match for her skill
and persistence in the centre.
The game could have had a different outcome if advantage had been
played as a shot was taken on goal but the umpire considered
Newmarket to be at disadvantage and blew the whistle just before the
ball crossed the goal line.
Newmarket defended well from the 25 while the Huntingdon D saw more
action. Newmarket were unlucky again and again as the ball found
posts and ‘keeper but never the back of the net.
Previous threats from Huntingdon had all been cleared but a scuffle
around the goal saw the ball pushed in to score, as Newmarket
watched. With just 7 minutes to go Newmarket pulled out all the
stops but to no avail.
Newmarket have shown they are capable of playing at a level
sufficient to top the table but they lack consistency and luck was
against them on Saturday, depriving them of points.
Newmarket are at home to Cambridge Ladies II on Saturday.
