Once again, Newmarket
met the challenge from a table topping team but once again, they
were unable to get points for their efforts.
In a typically physical
meeting, Newmarket got off to a sluggish start. Wisbech took the
initiative and imposed an attacking set up, from which Newmarket
didn’t really recover.
Gaps developed in the
home midfield, pulling the forwards back so that Newmarket’s attacks
started before the half way line and lacked support. Rachel Allen
was an exception, finding space and holding her own on the right
hand side, which saw most of the play.
Wisbech attacked in
numbers and overwhelmed the defence to score at 15 minutes.
After a frantic first
half, Newmarket found more composure in the second. Hazel Sadler and
Bev Rolph working well at the back to keep Wisbech out of the D.
Claire McDonnell was
player of the match, creating goal chances yet also pulling back to
retrieve balls from the defence. The hosts had more goal chances and
credit goes to the Wisbech goalkeeper – although the legality of her
moves was contested once.
A draw was certainly
deserved against Wisbech, who regularly frequent the premier
division.
Newmarket face Sawtry
on Saturday, 12.00 at West Suffolk College.
