On Saturday, Newmarket
faced the third of the top three teams in as many weeks.
Previously, Newmarket had lifted their game but been beaten by one
goal. This time, they were rewarded by points.
Once again, the home side
were slow to start but lessons learned made for a strong attacking
format.
Sarah Haird had a great
all-round game at centre and got in low at the left post to score
the first goal. Rachel Allen nearly followed suit but a foot-foul
on the goal line was spotted by the umpire and the goal was
disallowed.
The team’s commitment and
training showed in the second half when Newmarket dominated.
Familiar positioning allowed the accurate passing needed to bypass
Sawtry’s tight marking.
Di Thomas tucked the ball
neatly between the ‘keeper’s legs to score the second goal. Player
of the match Tracy Cockerill took the third, sweeping in a long
range pass from across the D, behind the goalie’s back.
