Newmarket were able to field a similar side to
last week, plus welcoming back Gail McDonnell and Marie Williams.
The consistency of team membership showed in
improved awareness of each other on the pitch so that support was
more effective and passing more accurate.
Claire McDonnell and Di Thomas continued their
strong partnership in the middle, scoring a hat-trick each.
McDonnell’s came from a Sarah Haird pass, a short
corner and a solo effort passing four defenders before casually
slotting it in.
Thomas scored with a deflection, a disputed touch
on the line and a skillful flick over the keeper to the left hand
corner.
Sarah Hummersone made her mark in the first half,
placing herself well to capitalize on a goal-line scuffle following
a Thomas hit.
Tracy Cockerill added to her tally after
receiving the ball from across the D – she will be missed as injury
prevents her playing for the rest of the season.
Clodie Rolph had an exceptional first half,
mobile and strong in defence.
Player of the match was closely contested but
deservedly went to C McDonnell.
Newmarket were pleased to make an impact on their
goal difference which should help their league position. Newmarket
play Bourne IIIs on Saturday at West Suffolk College, noon.
