Newmarket started their 5NW league
campaign with a full squad of 16 players against a weakened nomad
team, who turned up with only 9 men. From the whistle Newmarket
looked strong, playing a good passing game around the visitors and
it wasn’t long before Ian Starling beat the keeper from a perfectly
weighted pass from Duncan Freed. This boosted Newmarket’s
confidence, knowing there were going to be
plenty more goals before the end of the match.
It
was a very hot day which made players tired quickly, so Newmarket
made the most of the extra players and changed regularly.
Newmarket’s next goal came from Starling, who had
an easy tap into goal to make it 2 – 0. The first half finished 3 –
0 to the home team with the third goal coming from Mark Pears.
The
second half started with the away team welcoming 2 late players,
giving them a full 11, but the home team did not let this intervene
with their penetrating play through the middle of the park,
utilizing the midfield of Jefferson and Newmarket’s
man of the match Jez Harris. The second half also saw bad news for
the home team, with Starling and Freed both being shown the yellow
card and being sin binned, but Nomads only found their way into
Newmarket’s area a couple of times. Newmarket’s
Anthony Nowell made the score 4 – 0 with a well struck shot from the
top of the D. Andrew Level and Adam Gallop also got onto the score
sheet with the game finishing 6 – 0 to the home team.
