Newmarket made the long journey to Skegness for their second game of
the season and traveling with a squad of 14 Newmarket where
confident of a win. This soon turned into over- confidence as Alford
showed their strength of pace and accurate long passes. The
Newmarket defence had to work hard with
all the attacking being one way, Newmarket seemed to be missing the
drive that they had for last week's win.
Neil
Badcock gave the inspirational half time talk, reminding the players
that they had what it takes to gain the win. With this, Newmarket
started the second half dominating the middle of the field through
Jez Harris and Dave Badcock and also making good use of wingers Josh
Dawson and Anthony Nowell. This helped Newmarket win the first short
corner of the game, but was unable to convert as the ball was not
stopped outside the area. Approx 15 minutes into the half Newmarket
made an attack, utilizing the skill of Dave Badcock who passed the
ball through to Ian Starling, the ball was then given to Mark Pears
who comfortably slotted the ball past the keeper into the goal.
Newmarket continued with the pressure, winning two more short
corners but with no result. With 10 minutes to go Alford pushed it
up a step, once again Newmarket’s defence
had to work hard and man of the match Dan Brown making some good
saves for the game to finish 0 – 1 to Newmarket.
Newmarket next play Long Sutton III on 7th October at
home, 14:30 push back.
