Newmarket
looked to continue their winning streak against Long Sutton at home,
which some players have grown to call “the paddock”.
The Yellow and blues where missing captain and centre back Neil
Badcock, which saw Sean Watts step into his place and make way for
Adrian Atkinson at right back.
The
first half saw Newmarket as the better side, but the away keeper was
stubborn and would not let the home side score, with a number of
attempts from Pears, Starling and Gallop all being saved. Newmarket
worked very hard, utilising every inch on
the pitch and pushing hard down the wings. The first goal came from
young Josh Dawson, making a good run and passing the ball through
the away defence for Dawson to hit the
ball low past the keeper. It wasn’t long before Dawson scored his
second, who found the space and time in a goal mouth scramble to
accurately flick the ball over the keeper.
The
second half started with a Long Sutton push back but it didn’t take
long for Newmarket to gain possession and
continue with the great teamwork and passing we saw in the first
half. Newmarket had many chances with short corners, with some
resulting in bad push outs from Pears and a combination of good
keeping and inaccurate hits from Freed, no goals came of this.
Midway through the second half Dawson stepped onto the pitch after
resting and within 2 minutes sealed his hat-trick
with a simple open goal tap in, which gave this young player man of
the match.
With
not long to go Long Sutton made one last attack on the yellow and
blues goal, and managed to get themselves a consolation
goal, the first Newmarket has conceded this season.
The
match finished 3 – 1, with Newmarket
traveling to Wisbech on the 14th October, looking for
their 4th victory.
