Newmarket Ladies travelled to Peterborough to play Bourne. The
odds were against Newmarket from the start, they found themselves
pitted against a team who seemed used to playing at a higher
level; Bourne did not demonstrate hockey skills of what a bottom
of the league side should.
Bourne took control from the starting whistle and scored from a
strong, top of the D shot within a minute and a half. There next
goal arriving just 8 minutes later from a short corner set piece,
this left Newmarket reeling in disbelief. The pressure was on to
make a come back and the battle was for them not too feel
defeated. A positive and aggressive mood enabled Newmarket to
crush Bourne's elation.
Newmarket seemed to be penned into their defending half as Bourne
created wave after wave of attack. Bourne were perhaps given to
much room to run with the ball and it must be said that Newmarket
were not getting tackles in early enough on some occasions.
Jasmine Wombwell, who made her season debut, played a solid
game as Goal Keeper, she made some very calm and calculated
saves. The defence also reacted well with the constant pressure
from Bourne.
Newmarket soon realised that they needed to play to their
strengths and used quick, short passing which saw speedy breaks
from Lydia Fison and Sarah Haird in particular. The newly
appointed Bourne Goal Keeper was now being tested and the play
became far more even.
The half time talk was incredibly positive for Newmarket and each
player still had belief that they would become victorious. This
was to create a huge impact on the second half. Bourne seemed to
focus on keeping Newmarket at bay with tight marking
of their forwards and packing their midfield to block quick
passing.
A short corner was awarded to trailing Newmarket and a magnificent
strike was unleashed by Lydia Fison to put them back in
contention.
Newmarket's new found energy saw some cracking moves up the pitch.
Tracy Cockerill made some excellent runs on the left wing drawing
players wide. Supporting Cockerill was Isabel Hooley. The pair's
slick movement provided Newmarket's all important levelling goal.
A slap hit shot from Hooley rebounded off the keeper leaving Di
Thomas to tap the ball home.
Newmarket were determined to keep the scores level at least but were
left feeling sick as Bourne scored once more to ruin town's unbeaten
run and claim the three points. The game can only be described as
controversial and Newmarket eagerly awaits the next meeting of the
two teams.
