Newmarket’s unbeaten
start to the season ended today as Cambridge took advantage of a
poor performance from the home team. The yellow and blues found it
hard to complete simple passes, which resulted in lack of
possession. All the pressure came from Cambridge and it wasn’t long
before they where awarded a short corner, which turned into a
penalty flick to Cambridge due to their attempt on goal being
stopped on the line by a defender's foot. Newmarket’s keeper Dan
Brown was unlucky not to save the penalty and Cambridge was one up.
The home team appeared to not recover from such an early goal in the
game, and this showed from a lack of motivation to push forward. The
next fifteen minutes saw Newmarket on the defence, finding it hard
to stop a confident Cambridge team, who scored another two goals.
Only ten minutes
remained of the first half, Duncan Freed put an aerial ball through
to Mark pears. The only player he had to beat was the Cambridge
keeper, which he did by pushing the ball at speed into the goal.
After this Newmarket saw that all was not lost and transformed into
the winning team that has performed well over the past 4 weeks.
Cambridge did not know what hit them as Newmarket stepped up the
pace of the game. Newmarket won three short corners, and although no
goals came from this Cambridge looked worried at the change of pace,
their only saviour being the half time whistle.
The second half started
well for Newmarket, with some good passing across the team.
Unfortunately this only lasted five minutes. For some unknown reason
the yellow and blues again found it difficult to complete simple
passes. Players got dragged out of position and man marking was
poor. Newmarket became frustrated, with umpire decisions being
questionable it was difficult to find something positive. Defender
Sean Watts saw yellow for argumentative behaviour with the umpire,
which made it even more difficult for the home team. Newmarket’s
frustration grew when players wanted to know how long was left, to
only be told not to ask by the umpire. With not knowing how long was
left to try and turn things around, Newmarket looked lost, and this
was punished with a fourth goal from Cambridge. The game finished
1-4 in favour of Cambridge City V.
Next week Newmarket
travel to St Ives to face their 4th team, looking to get
back to their winning ways.
