After last week's
defeat Newmarket Ladies were out to prove they are not a side who are
easily beaten. Newmarket played some textbook hockey and produced a
spectacular win against a young Cambridge Ladies side.
The first half saw tentative hockey in the early stages and both teams
took a while to get into a rhythm. The first two goals came for town
in the 7th and 15th minute- Di Thomas claiming both. From then on the
Cambridge keeper was being pelted with shots from many Newmarket
players. A disallowed goal for Claire McDonnell left her feeling hard
done by but she channelled that energy well and through a short corner
play nearly split the backboards with a straight strike.
Cambridge were relieved to hear the half time whistle and they
received stern words from their coach. Newmarket were brimming with
confidence and were eager to get back on pitch and convert some more
chances.
The home side quickly built on their lead through Claire McDonnell who
eased through the field to score. She went on to convert 4 more
chances to gain an emphatic double hat-trick. For this reason she was
awarded player of the match.
Tracy Cockerill solidified her left wing partnership with Isabel
Hooley as the pair demonstrated superb link up play again - Newmarket
has really worked at this in training - drawing players wide and using
the free support player.
Cambridge looked more and more fragile and Newmarket seemed
practically unstoppable. It was from simple hockey, and good triangle
work that Newmarket capitalised so easily and their passion to score
more goals deflated Cambridge further.
Sarah Haird joined in the goal fest and scored her second for the
season in fine style by sweeping the ball to the keeper's right.
Cockerill also got her name on the score sheet. She went on a demonic
run down the wing and then fired the ball into the goal.
The Cambridge keeper; despite her goal being blitzed with shots showed
good awareness and stopped town from scoring many more. Jasmine
Wombwell was left happily with little to do in Newmarket's goal and
only had to make a couple of saves the whole game. Gail McDonnell
played a hardcore game on the right and nearly added her name to the
score sheet from a short corner shot but Di Thomas instinctively
deflected the ball into the goal to claim a hat-trick. This was the
last play of town's biggest win to date and they look to produce many
more similar results.
