Newmarket Ladies got back to winning ways this week with victory over Cambridge South in the Cup. The first half was a rather scrappy affair with neither team taking charge of the game. Newmarket’s defence did well to soak up the pressure from numerous short corners with Isabel Hooley and Sam Smith getting out to the ball before the opposition could get a clear shot away. At the other end Newmarket also failed to make the most of their short corners with Lydia Fison hitting a couple of shots just wide. Newmarket finally took the lead when Claire McDonnell came on and flicked the ball into the back of the net with her first touch of the game. Newmarket had a couple more chances to extend their lead after this but failed to capitalise on these and then conceded a soft goal to go into half time with the scores one a piece.

In the second half Newmarket kept possession much better and played more positive hockey but struggled to find the killer final pass on many occasions. That was until Gail McDonnell picked up the ball in the final 16 and drove into the circle to fire a powerful shot into goal and restore Newmarket’s lead. This lifted Newmarket’s confidence and they soon made the score 3-1 when Tracy Cockerill collected a pass and slotted the ball past the keeper from close range. This was how the score remained until the final whistle. Newmarket now have a few weeks rest before their league campaign continues in January.
