This
week Newmarket travelled to the town of Market Deeping to face
Bourne III, the only team to score more goals than Newmarket in
division 5NW.
The
first ten minutes of the game saw all the play in Newmarket’s half,
the home team held most of the possession but could not break into
Newmarket’s D. Eventually the ball fell to Simon Greenwood who gave
a great through ball to Adam Gallop on the right wing. Gallop
charged up pitch and made no mistake in hitting the ball across goal
for Barney Bowen to push it past the keeper.
With
the score being 0 – 1 to Newmarket, the yellow and blues stepped it
up a gear, winning 3 short corners in the space of 5 minutes. Bourne
could only clear the ball from these set pieces and gave away a long
corner on the third. The ball was given to Chris Jefferson who had a
shot a saved by the keeper, but the ball dropped to Mark Pears who
netted his 10th goal in as many games.
Bourne retaliated with some sharp passing and quickly made it into
Newmarket’s D, but their attempt saw keeper Dan Brown make a great
save to keep it 0 – 2.
Not
long before the end of the half, Newmarket showed why they sit top
of the table, passing the ball around, waiting for a gap in the
Bourne defence. Vice Captain Ian Starling made that gap and made it
0 – 3 when he scored a fantastic goal from the top of the D,
powering the ball into the bottom corner.
The
second half began with Newmarket being the dominant side, Bourne’s
main outlet was man marked out of the game by Jez Harris and
Newmarket worked hard to keep possession. 15 minutes into the second
half and Newmarket were again on the attack, Josh Dawson picked up
the ball and dribbled past two defenders before cheekily flicking
the ball past the keeper, making the score 0 – 4.
Newmarket where sitting comfortably and this showed, the last 15
minutes was hard work for defenders Duncan Freed, Adrian Atkinson,
Jez Harris and man of the match Simon Greenwood, but they where
unlucky when Bourne scored a very soft goal, making the result 1 – 4
to Newmarket.
Next
week Newmarket are at home to Cambridge South, push back at 1pm.
