Newmarket ladies
travelled to Stamford for a top of the table clash.
From the pushback Market Deeping gained early possession and gave the
Newmarket defence a scare when a top of the D shot rattled the goal
post. Newmarket soon found their feet and scored after just seven
minutes through Claire McDonnell. Using their routine of short passes
McDonnell drove through to the D and clipped the ball cleverly past
the keeper. It was not long till McDonnell hit the target again. She
darted past three defenders and her shot left the keeper dumbfounded.
Town continued to play well with the defence soaking up the pressure.
The midfielders and forwards did well to hit Market Deeping on the
break. Bev Rolph in particular made some strong and timely tackles and
Beth Wombwell continued her positive come back from injury to dominate
her space well. Sarah Haird also distributed the ball wisely
throughout the game and connected brilliantly with the forward line.
At half time memories of the teams' previous meeting came flooding
back as Newmarket found themselves in exactly the same position - two
nil up. This time they wanted to maintain their lead instead of
resting on their laurels.
Town were lifted by captain Sam Smith who made some prominent runs and
enforced a positive attitude upon her team. Newmarket increased their
lead from this after a minute into the second half. Di Thomas getting
the final touch in a front of goal scramble. She put herself on the
score sheet again minutes later by sweeping a pass from Claire
McDonnell through the keeper's legs.
Market Deeping should be commended for their will to fight back and
they produced a well worked goal from a short corner. A penalty flick
was awarded to Market Deeping after a foul in the D. Sue Bullimore,
Town's keeper, was well up to the test and remained cool, calm and
collected to parry the ball away easily.
The end of the second half was scrappy and a card was shown to a
Market Deeping player as tempers began to fray. There was nothing else
that the home team could do to unsettle Newmarket though.
The win takes Newmarket to the top of the league by two points. Market
Deeping are second with a game in hand. It is likely to go down to the
final match of the season to determine who takes the honours.
