Newmarket Ladies had to continue their winning run against St Ives to
remain league leaders and that is exactly what they did.
From
the off Newmarket pushed forward and created chances and a good solo
effort from Claire McDonnell where she lifted the ball high into the
top left hand corner put Newmarket in front. The play was all
Newmarket's but their passing was hurried and they did not use the
space productively.
The
second half started very similarly but the tempo of the game
increased. Beth Wombwell was quick to spot an opening in the goalmouth
and claimed Town's second goal.
St
Ives showed resilience and from a second strike in a short corner play
they were rewarded with a goal. The realisation that St Ives could
easily upset Town's winning form and indeed their title race kicked
in. Claire McDonnell charged into the D and slammed the ball into the
goal to give Town a bit of breathing space.
The
midfield kept their shape well and Louise Downs continued her strong
possessional play at the back for Newmarket and going into the last
two minutes they were completely on top of the game. Di Thomas was
lucky enough to get the final goal where she drove along the back line
and reversed the ball into the back of the goal.
Sarah
Haird was named player of the match through her positive play and
aggression on the ball. Newmarket's title race continues next weekend
where they face Bourne at home.
