Newmarket, off to a
flying start, scored two goals within four minutes when facing Bourne
last Saturday. Tracy Cockerill finding the back of the goal first and
then Claire McDonnell capitalised for Town from a short corner.
There was no looking back for Newmarket as they launched countless
attacks. Cockerill found the target twice more in the first half by
sweeping the ball in from the far post and then a fantastic move where
she picked up a fast travelling ball on the wing and slotted it away.
Newmarket stayed strong in the second half and within six minutes
Claire McDonnell scored again from a short corner rebound. The home
side listening to wise words from coach Colin Seakins and let the ball
do the work and began to distribute it wide. In an incident where
Bourne produced an attack Bev Rolph cleared off the goal line and Sue
Bullimore also demonstrated great reflexes to deflect any on target
shots.
The game sank to an aggressive level with players generally swiping at
the ball, communication also started to break down on both teams but
Town increased their goal count - Claire McDonnell getting two more
for a hat trick - they were produced by 'pass and move play' and
Cockerill skilfully claiming her fourth.
Bourne managed to score in similar fashion to other teams facing Town
in previous weeks. They sneaked a shot in from a short corner.
Newmarket's right winger Beth Wombwell commented that "the team played
out of their skins and we now have the Premier League in our sights."
Newmarket are now pushing for a double victory as they face Sawtry in
the Cup Final and still edge all other teams in the league.
