Newmarket took on
Sawtry to defend their position at the top of the Cambridgeshire
Ladies Division 1 league.
The game started with a good opening passage of passing from Town and
Di Thomas reversed the ball into the bottom corner to put them into
the lead after 2 minutes.
Both teams were passing well but quite often did not manage to find
their forwards.
Tracy Cockerill was next to convert a chance for Newmarket - she was
fast to react to the defending keeper's soft clearance and bundled the
ball over the line.
The second half Sawtry came out fighting and tried to play a 'passing
game.' Newmarket cottoned on to this and made the early tackles. The
midfield of Lydia Fison, Isabel Hooley and Sarah Haird remained
strong. 21 minutes went by and Lydia Fison scored her 4th of the
season by opening out the defence and smashing the ball past the
keeper.
The umpires had to confer on a few decisions and Beth Wombwell was
shocked to be given a green card for an unintentional error.
Di Thomas was taken down in the D and was awarded a penalty flick. She
did not connect properly with the ball and sent it straight to the
keepers pads.
Not deterred Newmarket scored another; Isabel Hooley finding the
target with the aid of a deflection for the 3rd time in her hockey
career.
Town finished the game in high spirits and with one game left to play
in the league, it is entirely in their own hands whether they take the
honours or not.
