Newmarket travelled to
Cambridge this week, hoping for a win so they could stay top of
division 5NW. The away team were again with out their two main
centre backs Badcock and Freed but kept the same defensive line as
last week.
Newmarket where looking
for an early lead against Cambridge, and worked well to pass the
ball around the home team. The first goal came from a well
choreographed short corner routine from the home team, and after the
push back City quickly made it two.
Newmarket didn’t hold
back though, winning several short corners in the first half, but
they where unable to convert.
Cambridge scored their
third, again a short corner routine which saw their striker flick
the ball over keeper Dan Browns leg. Newmarket managed to hold City
off for a while after this, but were unable to penetrate the home
teams D, and when the home team made a successful counter attack the
yellow and blues became four down.
Newmarket did manage to
get a goal though, Josh Dawson drag flicked from a short corner, the
ball hit a defender, but advantage was played as it dropped to Mark
Pears who tapped it in.
The second half was
fairly even sided, Newmarket’s defence of Greenwood, Harris,
Atkinson and Drane stopped most of the attacking plays while Gallop,
Magnusson, Jefferson and Dawson held the midfield.
But despite the away
team's efforts, City scored once more from a short corner.
Newmarket never once
dropped their heads in the game, they consistently made it difficult
for the home team. Newmarket played very well but unfortunately
Cambridge played better. Newmarket walked away from the game, not
wanting to accept defeat, but look forward to next week’s fixture at
home to St Ives IV.
