Newmarket faced St Ives, who sit
second from bottom in Division 5NW, and welcoming back Duncan Freed
the home team expected an easy win.
Within 5 minutes of the start it was
the away team who opened the scoring, which shocked Newmarket. The
home team responded quickly with Anthony Nowell scoring from an Adam
Gallop cross.
From the St Ives push back Newmarket
pushed forward, pressing the away team's defence, but saw their goal
attempts saved by the St Ives' keeper. The yellow and blues took
their league position for granted, appearing not to have the drive
that has won them games in the past and St Ives scored their second
from a counter attack.
Newmarket again had problems
converting short corners, but the home defence held off the St Ives
attacks, so it was up to the attackers to try and level the score.
It was Kieran Drane who equalised
from a loose ball in the St Ives D just minutes before the half time
whistle, it was also his first of the season.
In the second half, the teams where
deadlocked, Newmarket made some sloppy passes and did not take full
advantage of the wide players, and St Ives could not get passed the
home team's defence.
Eventually, St Ives managed to find a
gap in the Newmarket defence, and although Drane managed to knick
the ball away from the attacker, he unfortunately sent the attacker
towering to the floor, giving St Ives a penalty flick, where
normally a short corner might have been expected.
The away team put the ball past
keeper Dan Brown, making it 3 – 2.
With only 5 or so minutes left of the
game Newmarket subbed off keeper Brown to field 11 outfield players,
but this was not enough for Newmarket to get a point from the game.
Newmarket now sit second in the
league after gifting St Ives with only their second win of the
season.
Newmarket now face March Town III
away next week, starting at 4pm, hoping to get back to their winning
ways.
