Blustery conditions contributed to the scrappy game between Newmarket and Cambridge City Ladies teams.

Newmarket quickly broke into their stride and stole the Cambridge push back. Although playing quite centrally, the initial attack came down the right side and Sarah Haird swept a cross to Di Thomas. She beat the advancing keeper who got back to her feet quickly and tried to block Thomas' shot. Wombwell was quick to assist and stroked the ball into goal after 14 minutes.

The play was still frantic and Newmarket were not playing in their normal style.

In the 21st minute of the second half, Town were awarded a short corner. Lydia Fison's shot was repelled into the path of Sarah Haird who pounded the ball into goal. More short corners followed but Town were missing players to deflect balls on the posts.

Cambridge had a good passage where they put pressure on the Newmarket D forcing Sue Edwards to make a save. Isabel Hooley used fantastic slap hits to reach her forward line and linked up beautifully with Tracy Cockerill. Sarah Drane made a big impact on the right wing and forced Cambridge out wide.

The final play of the game gave Louise Downs her sixth goal of the season as she slammed a short corner ball straight into goal.

Player of the match was awarded to Sarah Haird for her efforts and with two matches before the Christmas break, Town are level at the top of the table with Cambridge South who have played an extra game. The two teams meet next week.
