The game started at
a fast pace with Cambridge University distributing the ball well and
Newmarket making confident interceptions. It was Cambridge who
capitalised first as a lurking striker hit the target from the far
post.
Despite this, Town's confidence continued and driving runs up the
wings by Tracy Cockerill created space for the forwards to flock the
goal area. Isabel Hooley had a powerful surging run along the left
wing and passed to Claire McDonnell. She lost two defenders and struck
cleanly into the back of goal.
The play once again was frantic as both teams fought to dominate.
Louise Downs and Sam Smith used great vision on their free hits. Di
Thomas was fouled in the D and awarded a short corner. Beth Wombwell
pushed out to McDonnell who squared the ball to Downs. she then
switched it back to McDonnell who slammed the ball passed the keeper
in fine style.
The second half started tentatively but Cambridge seemed less shaky in
defence. A three pass move spanning the length of the pitch from a
free hit from Downs created the next goal. Downs provided a straight
ball to Gail McDonnell who passed to Sarah Drane; she drilled in a
brilliant cross and with a defender's aid the ball whistled passed the
keeper into goal. After much deliberation the goal was awarded.
Cambridge carried on fighting and were rewarded with a goal from a far
post slip shot which seemed to take everyone by surprise.
There were some Cambridge short corners that gave Newmarket a few
worrying moments in the last ten minutes but they hung on as the
winners and so their unbeaten run continues.
