Newmarket faced Wisbech for the first time this season due to postponement. Town were very cautious early on which allowed the visitors to launch positive attacks. Newmarket were penned in their own D as Wisbech tried to slot some shots into goal. An outstanding flurry of saves by Goalkeeper Sue Edwards prevented Town from being at least two goals behind early on.

Newmarket began to communicate and worked together to put on a masterful display of passing as they totally utilised their space. Lydia Fison created a quick break and threaded a pass to Claire McDonnell, she slotted the ball to Di Thomas who put it in line for in form Sarah Haird to score from the left post.

Town were now feeling confident and were firing on all cylinders. It was McDonnell who next weaved through players to place a ball in the back of goal. Five minutes later she claimed another as Louise Downs passed to Thomas, who then squared the ball to McDonnell, and she showed no hesitation in smashing home and ensuring a brace belonged to her name.

The second half saw more of the same as Town again dominated but slightly neglected their space on the wings because of eagerness to score.

The unflappable duo on the left Isabel Hooley and Tracy Cockerill, worked well to weave up the pitch, and with a smooth finish, Cockerill put the ball home.

A turn of events came about as Wisbech scored after good build up on their right side. Bizarrely, no-one was sure who got the final touch. Never the less the goal stood and Town got on with sealing the win.

A golden opportunity fell for Sarah Haird, as the Wisbech keeper was drawn wide by an earlier diagonal shot. The ball found Haird and she confidently struck the target to delight the supporters and like McDonnell, she claimed a brace.

Sue Edwards was awarded player of the match for her superb and instinctive goalkeeping and Town are still on course to match last seasons cup and league double.
