Newmarket this week faced Boston,
after last weeks 2 – 1 loss. The home team was unchanged with exception to
keeper Chris Warren and midfielder Ben Coupe being in the line up.
Newmarket started out strong, stringing together some good attacking plays
and utilising the speed of Josh Dawson and Andrew Level on the wings. Most
of the play was in Boston’s half of the pitch but with the yellow and
blues having the majority of possession. Striker Ian Starling netted his
first of the season, pouncing on the ball after it bounced off the keeper.
Boston then netted two goals in succession, taking the lead as a result
from some shaky Newmarket play. With the home team not wanting a repeat
result from last week they quickly got their act together and pressed
forward. Newmarket had a flurry of short corners awarded to them, and
although they are not renowned for scoring from these Chris Jefferson
tried something different on receiving the ball. His strike was perfect,
the right height and enough pace to beat the keeper, but was stopped on
the line by a defenders leg. This resulted in Newmarket having a penalty
flick in their favour, and it was Josh Dawson who stepped up. Keeping
control of his nerves he put the ball to the left of the keeper, and made
the result 2 – 2 just before the break.
The second half started with the
home team more determined to get the 3 points out of the game, and young
defender Jordan Newmes showed more determination than anyone. Making many
great tackles and being the root of many counter attacks he picked up man
of the match. Newmarket took the lead from one of these counter attacks
through Ben Coupe, dribbling through two Boston players and striking from
the top of the D. The action didn’t stop there, Chris Jefferson scored
Newmarket’s fourth goal after a short corner routine, giving the home team
a two goal advantage. There was one more goal in the dying minutes, but
this time it was the boys from Lincolnshire taking the result to 4 – 3.
Newmarket now sit third in the league, with only their goal difference
keeping them from the top of the pack.
Next week Newmarket travel to the
seaside resort of Skegness to play last year's tough rivals Alford II.
